Thresholds

For over 35 years, Thresholds has been a recognized leader and pioneer in the area of mental illness. As the nation's largest psychiatric rehabilitation agency, Thresholds has developed a model program opening the doors of hope and opportunity to many.

Goal Areas:

Prevent Unnecessary Hospitalization
Independent Living
Social Rehabilitation
Vocational Rehabilitation
Academic Preparation
Promote Physical Well Being

Our Members:
We do not have clients or patients at Thresholds. The participants in our program are "members" who have come to rebuild their self-esteem and self motivation. Members are partners with our staff in developing and implementing a personal rehabilitation program.

  • "Thresholds sets an example for the nation to follow. Community based rehabilitation works, we need more programs like Thresholds."
    -Tipper Gore
Thresholds Program:

Partial Hospitalization Program:
This highly structured program is our most intensive level of care, specifically designed to avert inpatient hospitalization.

Residential Program:
A variety of community housing including supervised homes and apartments are available to members. An integral part of the program includes the development of basic living skills including diet, hygiene, and money management.

Structured Psychiatric Day Program:
Located at each of our 7 major facilities, this therapeutic program involves psychiatric rehabilitation emphasizing development of independent living and socialization skills, case management and educational advancement.

Assertive Community Outreach:
Thresholds program involves intensive case management through home visits. Usually for members at high risk of hospitalization, the program (know as Bridge) provides one-on-one rehabilitation in the community.

Vocational Program:
Thresholds provides supervised vocational skills training in a structured and supportive environment. Additionally, a team of job support and placement staff assist members in their vocational pursuits.

Thresholds Rehabilitation Industries (TRI):
TRI was established in 1978 as a vehicle for employing Thresholds members. It is part of the agency's larger vocational placement program, which works with some 150 businesses in the Chicagoland area. TRI businesses and Thresholds' placement program help hundreds of people with mental illness find jobs each year.

Thresholds Offers Several Nationally Recognized Specialized Programs In Addition To Its Primary Care:

  • Hearing Impaired Program, serving the deaf mentally ill population
  • Homeless Program, mobile outreach to Chicago's homeless
  • Mother's Project, serving parenting members and their children
  • Older Adult Program, serving seniors with mental illness
  • Young Adult Program, serving adolescents with mental illness
  • Research Program, to measure the effectiveness of programming and to contribute to the body of research on mental illness

Thresholds Statistics:
An impressive 80-85% of Thresholds Members who participated in the Rehabilitation Program successfully integrated into the community for an entire year without psychiatric hospitalization.

More the 50% of Thresholds Members in Goal-Oriented Programs are working at any given time; fewer than 5% enter Thresholds' Programs with Employment. Thresholds has working relationships with over 150 area businesses.

More than 90% of Members in Thresholds Homeless Program are in safe and appropriate housing at any given time.

  • "Thresholds has dedicated itself to creating programs that serves people's real needs."
    -Jim Edgar
